In the medical field, a viscus is an internal organ, viscera being the plural term of the word. Informally internal organs are also called "innards". Animal viscera removed from a butchered animal are known as offal.
Human viscera that is located in the abdominal region are the intestine, duodenum, colon, kidney, liver, peritoneum, spleen, gall bladder, adrenal gland, pancreas, appendix and stomach. Viscera in the pelvic region are the ovaries, fallopian tube, clitoris, vulva, urinary bladder, perinium, rectum, uterus, testicals and the coccyx.
In the past ancient civilisations have examined viscera to predict the future. This was done by examining the dimensions of the viscera, shape and other factors. In remote tribal societies this practise is still an important ritual.
